Akalei Designs is the original and largest producer of handcrafted beaded Hawaiian Lei. With over one hundred unique designs we were recently awarded “Best Beaded Lanyard” from The American Kumihimo Society (2023) for our complex braids. In addition our silk Hawaiian necklace is being showcased in a TV commercial for the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement Pop-Up Makēkē Market on an ad. And another positive compliment was three of our designs were selected in a juried art exhibit in Oahu by The Hawaiian Handweavers Hui. This is a beautiful pottery studio offering classes for up to 6 people (12 years old and up.) Come learn how to make a mug or bowl on the potter’s wheel. It’s lots of fun...a great way to spend quality time with friends and family or develop your throwing skills. First time throwing classes are between 2-2.5 hours and cost $165 with special discounts for long time residents. Fees for firing are assessed by quantity and volume of the pieces ranging between $5-12 per item made. Guests create their own Maui souvenir — including charcuterie boards, surfboards, wall art, and ornaments. Dara specializes in ocean resin art and teaches Maui’s best hands-on art experience with tropical hospitality, local fruit, and a welcoming studio atmosphere. Dara Miller also sells her Maui made fine art pieces.
