The Makawao Hongwanji Preschool in Pukalani is sponsored by and is affiliated with the Makawao Hongwanji Mission as an outreach to the needs of the community. We are committed to providing a positive, loving, safe and healthy environment to encourage your child's religious, intellectual, physical, social and emotional development to the fullest potential. We believe that children develop a strong sense of positive self-esteem with age-appropriate learning experiences that stimulate and encourage curiosity for learning. Teaching of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism is one of our aims. The Dharma Teachings are introduced through stories, songs and craft activities as well as weekly visits by the Resident Minister or once a month to the Temple.

Makawao Hongwanji Buddhist Temple is a center of spiritual growth, learning, and compassionate community service in the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji tradition, with a history in Maui dating back to 1907. Buddhists of all traditions, fellow travelers on the path of spiritual growth, and visitors are always welcome. We offer religious services, learning opportunities, study and interest groups, social activities, and opportunities for volunteering and community service. You don’t have to be Buddhist to explore the Buddhist path of self-reflection, awakening to the true meaning of life, joyous gratitude, and finding meaning in the all-embracing Great Compassion and all-inclusive Wisdom of Amida Buddha, which embraces all people, just as you are.
